Peter Schmeichel slams Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s lazy defending against Brentford

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel slammed Aaron Wan-Bissaka for jogging back as Ivan Toney escaped the offside trap to score the equaliser in the final minute of the game.

The English defender was found guilty of displaying lazy defending from his side as Brentford cleverly carved a way to score even after a tight back-line.

The Red Devils scored the match-winning goal via Mason Mount in the 96th minute. Before that, the host had 81 touches inside the box however they were still unable to convert any of their chances.

They lacked the cutting edge in front of the goal even after Ivan Toney had hit the woodwork multiple times in the game. However, the Bees were able to get their share of points as they breached United’s perfect defensive layout.

Wan Bissaka who was deployed on the left was the only player falling back. Toney was clever to witness this and he ran past the 26-year-old and squared the ball to Kristoffer Ajer.

Ajer scored from close range and that ended United’s hopes of grabbing all three points in the end.

As quoted by The Metro, Schmeichel blamed the English full-back for failing to stick with his team’s plans and showing lazy defending at such a crucial point of the game.

“If you look at Wan-Bissaka on the Brentford goal, and this is what I mean by standards. Wan-Bissaka is out there to the left, the ball gets crossed and now look at him.”

“He’s walking off, walking, walking, he’s jogging! And Ivan Toney would have been offside had he followed the back-four lineup and then that goal wouldn’t have happened.”

“Look at him [Wan-Bissaka] coming out! Look at it! That’s not Manchester United, that’s not pride, that’s not high standards. That’s not focussing on what your job is.”

“He has cost – not to blame him for this – but in that moment, because of what he did, or didn’t do, a simple thing like concentrating, they equalised.”

The €20m defender started on the left for the second consecutive game but he didn’t bring much confidence to the backline.

Wan-Bissaka lost possession 12 times as he was unable to hold the pressure from Brentford’s attacking unit. We believe that the English star should be deployed in the right and Erik ten Hag should prefer to play Diogo Dalot in the left.

The Portuguese has a better understanding of that part of the flank and he provides more stability in that position for United. We expect a different setup when the Red Devils face Chelsea in their next Premier League clash.
