Barcelona center-back Gerard Pique has backed Manchester United new signing Harry Maguire to take the club back to the summit of English football.
Manchester United broke the bank this summer when they splashed out £80 million to secure the services of Harry Maguire from Leicester City to make him the most expensive defender of all time. The transfer fees eclipsed the previous record which was set by Virgil Van Dijk when Liverpool paid Southampton £75 million for the Dutchman.
But it seemed like United needed reinforcements as they were struggling in the Premier League and a center back of Maguire’s quality was out of desperation to sort out their backline. The Red Devils finished in sixth place last season on the Premier League table and have not won the League title since 2013 after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
However, the Catalonian defender believes that the 26-year-old Maguire could be the man to lead United to the top in the Premier League. While speaking to Express Sport the 32 year old Barcelona center-back explained a similar situation with former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, “It happened before with Van Dijk and before about 10 years ago with Rio Ferdinand [when he joined United from Leeds], Culturally they invest a lot in good defenders and Harry Maguire is a great defender. I hope that they can be at the top again. Manchester United in the last few years they have been fighting to qualify for the Champions League but they have to be trying to win the Premier League. I hope with this signing they can return to the top.”
