Manchester United get their Champions League season to a great start with an important win against PSG, in Paris, with a score-line of 1-2. The Red Devils started the games as underdogs, but went onto to create more chances and deservedly got all three points. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were on the score-sheet, as the Red Devils clinched another memorable victory in the Parc de Princes.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had gone for a 3-5-2 formation, which was thought to be a different approach to the game. But it was the opposite, as the full-backs pressed high and created a lot of chances going forward. Especially Telles, who had a great debut but Wan-Bissaka had a wonderful game as well, as he pocketed Kylian Mbappe.
From the opening exchanges, PSG dominated possession, but the Red Devils created better chances but were wasteful as well. David De Gea had a top day in between the sticks with several important saves to keep United in the game. Manchester United opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the penalty spot after his first spot-kick was stopped, but the save was ruled out by VAR.
From then on PSG dominated, as the likes of Neymar and Mbappe were more involved in the game. But the Parisians couldn’t score, mainly due to a stubborn Manchester United defence, with Shaw and Tuanzebe having a superb outing. From the beginning of the second half, PSG went forward in numbers and scored in the 55th minute.
Anthony Martial scored the own goal from a PSG corner, which brought the game back to square one. But after a while, Solskjaer played a masterstroke, as he completely changed the system by taking out Telles and bringing on Paul Pogba. He changed the system to a 4-4-2 (diamond), with Pogba, Fred, McTominay and Bruno in the midfield.
This substitution changed the game as the Red Devils suffocated PSG and the Parisians couldn’t get out of their own half. United kept on pushing hard and finally scored through Marcus Rashford in the 87th minute to put the game to bed. Manchester United have now won 10 games, away from home, consecutively for the first time in the club’s history.
