Rafael blames Van Gaal for his departure from Manchester United

Rafael Da Silva was one of the best right-backs Manchester United had in the Premier League era. The Brazilian right-back had based his game very closely to that of former United captain Gary Neville, who he ultimately replaced for the Red Devils. In his recent interview with The Athletic, Rafael has thrown light on the abrupt end to his United career, under Louis Van Gaal.

In the summer of 2014, Louis Van Gaal was made the manager of Manchester United after his successful stint with the Dutch national side. Van Gaal was thought to bring back United’s glory years as the club had fallen behind in just a year after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. But Van Gaal failed to succeed at United but also ended up sending several good players away from Old Trafford.

In his latest interview Rafael, about his time with Van Gaal, said: “On the first day, he did not speak to me. On the second day, he said, ‘You can leave. I had not even trained and he said that. I could not believe it.” Van Gaal was reportedly not a people’ man and was reportedly very arrogant as well, which didn’t sit well with the United players.

Rafael also added that “He did not explain why. He said, “You will not play this season, I am not going to use you, if you want to leave, you leave.” The Brazilian full-back played only 10 games for United that season and left for Lyon the next summer.
