Raphael Varane gives honest verdict on VAR ruling out Ings’ goal

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane believes VAR made the correct judgment in ruling out a goal in the win against Aston Villa.

It was a considerably better performance than we’d put on in recent weeks, but it wasn’t without its challenges. Manchester United made an early breakthrough as Scott McTominay scored a goal after only eight minutes. Villa fought back with all their might.

Ollie Watkins, in particular, had been causing a slew of issues. The visitors were awarded a free-kick at the halfway line. Danny Ings scored a tap-in from two yards out after Villa executed the set-piece excellently.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, it was decided that Jacob Ramsey intentionally prevented Edinson Cavani from marking his man. After the game, Raphael Varane, who had a spectacular night out, argued that the VAR ruling was correct.

He said:

“No communication, it was a little bit longer. But we knew it was about an offside. After this, we needed to be focused on the game, to fight for the victory. I think it is the right decision.”

Ramsey had no intention of ever targeting the ball, thus the judgment was correct. He was only concerned with preventing Cavani from touching the ball, and it’s surprising that it took so long for that to be ruled a foul. VAR, on the other hand, needs that there be no reasonable uncertainty in order for it to make a conclusion.

It was finally decided in our favor, and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters—getting the right verdict.

Varane, in particular, was a dominant figure in the heart of a three-man defence. He provided adequate protection for both Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw, as well as being reliable in one-on-one situations. It would be a huge boost for the Frenchman, who has been looking a little sloppy since his injury.

On the other hand, on a day when Maguire was missing, the rest of the defensive unit performed admirably. VAR also correctly decided in our favour, demonstrating its significance in today’s game.

As the Premier League re-starts this weekend, Man United will now focus on playing Villa once more on Sunday.
