Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane believes that the detailed instructions provided by manager Erik ten Hag have played a crucial role in the club’s successful season.
With the team on the verge of securing a Champions League spot, they have already ended a six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup and have a chance to complete a domestic double by defeating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Varane has enjoyed an impressive campaign, particularly forming a strong partnership with Lisandro Martinez in the heart of the defence. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Varane spoke highly of Ten Hag’s managerial abilities.
He said:
“It’s been a great season with him. From day one, he was clear in his reasoning and explanations of what he wanted from us and how he wanted us to play. We’ve learnt his style and I think it’s come together well.”
Both the centre-backs have formed a strong pairing under the Dutch manager’s leadership. They have been able to push aside the defensive curse surrounding the club for the past few years.

Goalkeeper David de Gea’s achievement of keeping the most clean sheets in the Premier League has also helped Varane and Martinez to maintain their defensive rhythm.
Ten Hag wasted no time in favouring Varane over Harry Maguire as the right-sided centre-back due to Varane’s leadership qualities, organizational skills, and ability to inject passion into the team.
Varane’s comfort on the ball aligns well with Ten Hag’s desire for the team to play from the back, making him an excellent fit for the manager’s system.

However, the manager’s only concern is the defender’s proneness to injuries. If the French star can remain fit, it would relieve one worry for the Dutchman.
