Rashford Spot Kick Earns Manchester United The Points

English forward Marcus Rashford converted from the penalty spot to earn the three points for Manchester United against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjear and Manchester United breathed a huge sigh of relief as they returned to winning ways and ended Leicester’s unbeaten start to the new season. The struggling United side was awarded a penalty early in the game when Rashford was tripped inside the box by Caglar Soyuncu just after eight minutes.

The 21-year-old stepped up and tucked his spot-kick away to beat Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester City goal. There were plenty of issues at Manchester United over which player should be their main penalty taker but Rashford calmed those nerves around Old Trafford as Paul Pogba was not on the pitch.

Rashford could have doubled his tally in the second with a freekick from 30 yards out but he saw his effort smash into the crossbar and then hit the post on the angle. Former Leicester City defender Harry Maguire was given a disrespectful ovation from the traveling support but the 26-year-old came close to scoring against his old team but his header was straight at Schmeichel.

Leicester slowly grew into the game in the second half and midfield gem James Maddison came close on two occasions. Even left-back Ben Chilwell saw his effort tipped over by United goalkeeper David De Gea in the last few stages of the game.

It was a much-needed win for the Red Devils and those three points pushed them into fourth place on the table while Leicester slumped into fifth.
