The Red Devils are gearing up for the possibility of losing out on the transfer of long-term target Jadon Sancho by contemplating a move for Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi.
Manchester United have recently been developing concerns that Sancho’s signing may not materialize in the near future due to stalled discussions with the English forward’s current side Borussia Dortmund.
As a result, the Red Devils are now eyeing a move for Bernardeschi and have reportedly contacted Juventus over the player’s availability.
Sancho has been expected to be the primary focus of Manchester United FC manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heading into the summer transfer window. However, Dortmund’s persistence on not letting their star player depart for a fee of less than £120 million has caused problems in the Red Devil’s desire to sign the player. Such a hefty price-tag placed on Sancho by the Bundesliga side seems unreasonable to the Manchester United FC management.
This has led to Solskjaer considering alternatives in the form of talented wingers like Federico Bernardeschi and Federico Chiesa, both of whom are Italians and play in the Serie A.
Bernardeschi, a traditional right-winger, joined the Italian giants Juventus from fellow Serie A side Fiorentina in 2017. Since then, the player has won two Italian league titles with the Old Lady.
Despite being a quality player with great speed and dribbling ability, Bernardeschi has failed to cement his position in the Juventus starting lineup. Facing competition from Douglas Costa, Paulo Dybala as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, the 26-year old Italian international has featured in just nine appearances this current season.
Bernardeschi’s current contract with Juventus runs until 2022. Such an event is a sign of hope for the Red Devils to acquire the winger for a sum which will be meagre when compared to Sancho’s £120 million price-tag.
Moreover, the player’s ability to play even as a striker may come in handy for Solskjaer and the Manchester United FC squad, who are set to lose Odion Ighalo at the end of his extended loan deal next January. However, a firm show of interest from the Red Devils in signing Bernardeschi will be displayed only when Solskjaer is unable to temp Sancho into making a switch to Old Trafford.
