Rio Ferdinand claims he could be worth £170 million in today’s market

Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand has stated that he would be valued at £170 million in today’s market, considering inflation and the current transfer landscape.

Ferdinand, who joined United in 2002 for a fee of £30 million, also disclosed that he would expect wages of £400,000 per week. At the time of his transfer, the United centre-back became the most expensive defender in the world.

The former defender has made a confident statement that he would be worth £170 million in today’s market. He believes he would break that record once again if he were playing in the current era.

While speaking to his Youtube channel Five, the English centre-back said:

“£100m plus now with inflation. I was £30m back in the day. £100m will be cheap mate. Serious, in today’s market… £170m… 400k-a-week. That’s what I’ll be doing now. I would be that now.”

During his career, Ferdinand held the title of the most expensive defender twice. Initially, he became the costliest defender in British and global football when he transferred from West Ham to Leeds United for £18 million in 2000.

He then joined Man United two years later for a reported fee of £30 million, reclaiming the title as the world’s most expensive defender.

Since then, several defenders have surpassed Ferdinand’s previous record, with Harry Maguire currently holding the title after his move to United for nearly £80 million in 2019.

Ferdinand expressed confidence that he would exceed the transfer record if he were in his prime today.

It is anticipated that RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol could surpass Maguire’s record if he secures a transfer away from the Bundesliga side this summer, with Manchester City being strongly linked to the Croatian player.
