As reported by Manchester Evening News, Rio Ferdinand has talked about Memphis Depay and why he accepts that the forward failed to perform well during his spell at Manchester United.
Depay finished his paperwork for Manchester United in a £25m signing from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 after he helped his team win the Dutch Eredivisie title achievement. He completed as the league’s top scorer in his last season which acquired him a major move to the Premier League.
The young forward back then struggled badly to have an effect during a year and a half at Old Trafford as he scored only two goals prior to being permitted to move to Lyon.
Depay has since revamped his career in France and has risen as a superstar player for the Netherlands national team, scoring 27 goals in 66 appearances including the opener from the spot-kick as the Dutch beat Austria 2-0 at Euro 2020 on Thursday.
Ferdinand has now opened up on the 27-year-old and accepts the forward’s ‘maverick’ character kept him from being acknowledged as a good player at Manchester Unites.
As the star gets ready to take his action at Barcelona, Ferdinand addressed whether his move to Manchester came too early in the fostering forward’s career.
Rio Ferdinand said: “I think he’s a maverick. He’s a new-age type of personality who embraces everything of the lifestyle of a football player and beyond, and some people who are old school don’t like that and it’s taken time for someone even like me to adapt to that. I think it comes down to numerous things. Timing, the right time and right place, and maturity, he may have gone there too young. And coaching, the right coaching at the right time.”

Depay has scored 76 goals in only 178 appearances since taking the action to French football and looks set to finish the paperwork for Barcelona on a free transfer this mid-year subsequent to leaving Lyon towards the end of his current contract.
Maybe joining Manchester United was not the right step for the forward who is now living the best days of his career.
