Former Manchester United captain and legendary defender Rio Ferdinand has been a vocal supporter and critique of the Red Devils since his retirement. The Red Devils were terrible defensively in the two games of the Premier League season so far, which was rightly pointed out by Ferdinand. In his post-match analysis of the United game in BT Sports, Ferdinand has reiterated how badly United need a centre-back.
Like against Crystal Palace, United were defensively shaky against Brighton as well, and almost paid for it with the game. Brighton struck the frame of the game five times and scored twice, which portrays the Red Devils’ defensive woes. The signing of a centre-back has been reported several times for United, but with nine days to go for the transfer window to close, it seems very unlikely.
Analyzing United’s game, Ferdinand talked about their priority signings and immediately said that a centre-back signing was a must this summer.
He said: “It is not an issue that emerged the other day. I want Jadon Sancho, he is a generational talent and would get fans off their seats, but does he solve the fundamental problems I see with this team?”
He also added “There are moments before games when the opposition, are they looking across and saying they are going to have to be at their best to score past this Man United defence? I don’t think so.” Ferdinand is seriously concerned with United’s defence and feels it is the weakest link in the team.
Only time will tell if Ferdinand’s concerns cause problems to United or if they come out of it stronger.
