Rio Ferdinand has issued a warning to Raphael Varane about the environment of English football. He has spoken about the toughness of the Premier League.
Manchester United has agreed to a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. This deal looks set to be completed soon and the medicals will be done in a few day’s time. He will be signed next week as he faces a long quarantine before coming to England.
Raphael Varane will partner Harry Maguire at the core of United’s defense and Ferdinand has said that this partnership looks solid on paper. But Varane also has to deal with the toughness and physicality of the Premier League.
As reported by Mirror, Rio Ferdinand said: “On paper, it looks a very, very good combination, but he’s got to understand the English game is very different. You’ve got to go to Burnley and places like that. Sometimes it can be up and at ’em, a different style of football in the Premier League to anything he’s played in before. Can he deal with it? They’re the questions he’s going to get asked. Balls getting wrapped around his ear holes crosses from different angles that he hasn’t seen on a consistent basis in Spain where they play more on the floor, slower football, slowly build up. So he’s going to be asked to defend in a different way and that’s where he’s going to have to show his real class, can he adapt? That’s the real question. I genuinely believe he’s got the tools to do that.”
We do believe that Varane will be able to deal with the strong nature of the Premier League. He has been a four-time UCL winner and he has played against big teams. He has the experience to deal with the intensity of the English game.
The established center-back can bring in a lot of confidence and maturity to United’s back-line. His partnership with Harry Maguire will be key for Man United as they look to end their trophy drought this season.
