Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong has been criticised by Holland manager Ronald Koeman for being unable to defend after leaving him out of his squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
The former Celtic full-back is currently an important contributor for Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, and because of his gameplay, he has frequently been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka enjoyed a comeback to form since the turn of the year, while Diogo Dalot flourished at United during the first half of the season.
Frimpong is apparently admired by Erik ten Hag and his staff, and United are still reportedly interested in bringing in a new alternative.
The 22-year-old was selected for Louis van Gaal’s team for the World Cup in Qatar, and he is expected to maintain his strong performance in 2023. But, Koeman, who took over for van Gaal as head coach of the Netherlands, has serious doubts about his defensive skills. As reported by the Metro, the Dutch manager said:
“No Frimpong? This is because of the system that we play in. He plays almost as a right winger. My right back should be able to defend well in the first place and I have my doubts about that.”
Frimpong has played both right-back and right-winger for Leverkusen this season, tallying seven goals and nine assists.
While ten Hag may be interested in a new right-back, the team will prioritise a striker this summer, with Harry Kane reportedly being the manager’s top choice.
According to reports this week, Tottenham will inform United that they can let Kane depart for a one-time payment of £100 million, which they believe will discourage them from completing a formal move.
In order to catch up to Arsenal and Manchester City next season, United is still interested in another midfield alternative.
