Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Manchester United was not so smooth as you would have expected it to be. Not long ago, before he joined his former club, there were links connecting him to a move to Manchester City.
The rumours were getting stronger day by day and the whole football world was just talking about this jaw-dropping move. Manchester City was in search of a striker and Cristiano Ronaldo was in search of a club after leaving Juventus.
But who would be the lucky club, was the main question. Obviously, anyone would fancy Ronaldo’s chances of returning back to his former club, the club that has carved him into the kind of great player that he is right now.
Manchester United was the name, but their rivals were making some noise regarding the transfer. Manchester City was never close and even Pep Guardiola confirmed that they were never in contention to sign Ronaldo and they knew he would move to Manchester United.
But such strong were the rumours, that it was looking as if we would get to see our legendary striker wear the blue jersey.
But one person who knew that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be joining Manchester City was his Mum Dolores Aveiro. She had got the assurance from his son that he will join Manchester United and the rest of everything else is just rumours.
As reported by ESPN, Ronaldo’s mum revealed this by saying:
“On television, there was talk of Manchester City. But he said to me: ‘Mum, don’t worry about what they are saying, because I’m going to Manchester [United]’. Seeing the stadium full, with 75 thousand people, singing his name was a great emotion.”
Such was Ronaldo’s impact after returning that his mother broke down in tears when his son scored against Newcastle on the first game of his return to Manchester United.
Whatever you call it, a destiny, a plan, or a coincidence, we know that Ronaldo was made in Manchester and will always be a Red.
