Rooney Is My Idol, Claims Greenwood

Manchester United sensation Mason Greenwood has admitted that Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo Nazario are his two biggest idols as he looks to emulate them in the process of nailing down his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team squad.

The 18-year-old forward is deemed as a real talent and averaged a goal per game in United’s academy has made his way to the senior team this season, scoring his first competitive goal for the Red Devils in their 1-0 Europa League win over Astana back in September. The teenager also made his full debut for England’s Under 21s during the Three Lions win over Albania this Friday.

While speaking in an interview with reporters after the game, Greenwood has revealed that he has always considered former Manchester United striker Rooney to be the player he wants to mirror despite not having witnessed his abilities at a first-hand level. Greenwood has also named Brazilian icon Ronaldo as his idol alongside United’s all-time top-scorer and explained that he is keen to make a name for himself at the Theatre Of Dreams.

The teenager was asked about that player that he admired while growing up and his quick response was Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney, “It has to be Rooney. The Brazilian Ronaldo, too. They’ve always stood out for me and I’ve always looked up to them. Ronaldo was quite a while ago but my dad used to show me clips of him. Rooney is such a great goalscorer and that is what I want to be. You have to have a role model. I’ve never seen him, though. I’ve watched his games and the highlights on YouTube. Hopefully, I’ll get to meet him one day.”

The red half of Manchester is struggling at the moment and Greenwood would be delighted to play a part in helping his club get out of this slump in the near future.
