Manchester United’s crushing defeat at Liverpool has frustrated former player Roy Keane. He didn’t hold himself back when talking about his emotions after the match.
The visitors were dismantled at Anfield, losing 4-0 thanks to a double from Mohamed Salah and goals from Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz. When combined with Liverpool’s 5-0 win over United at Old Trafford in October, the season’s total score between the two teams is 9-0.
Those two games highlighted the massive talent gap between the two rivals, and former United captain Keane, who won seven Premier League titles and a Champions League during his time there, was left bitterly upset by the club’s downfall.
Keane slammed the United players’ lack of fight on Tuesday night, questioning their character and pointing out that several of them are out of contract in the summer.
Keane also revealed that watching United today makes him sad, rather than angry, as it did under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, highlighting the lack of pride at Old Trafford now compared to when he was captain.
As reported by SkySports, he said:
“It’s not anger, it was anger earlier in the season. It’s sadness. You look at the team today, there wasn’t any heart, no soul, no leaders, they lack real quality. They are so far off and you look at the United fans tonight… there’s no surprise with the scoreline, but Liverpool could score any time they went forward.”
“There is disarray at the club from the top. The fans have no time for the owners. They need a new manager, they need players in, they need players out. It’s so sad to see. It’s not the club I played for.”
“It doesn’t reflect what Man Utd stood for when I played for it. It’s chalk and cheese. I don’t see a Manchester United team out there fighting and playing with pride.
Roy Keane was certainly critical of certain players like Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Harry Maguire. He singled out these players as they were unable to finish their chances. Also, Paul Pogba was heavily criticized for letting his team down by limping off so easily in the first half.
Pundits like Gary Neville and Paul Scholes were left speechless and were ashamed to see the club fall to this extent. It is a 42-year low for a club that was once feared by the elite teams from all over the globe.
The United fans left the stadium even before the final whistle as they had enough of this embarrassing show at Anfield.
