Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham was asked about Anthony Martial’s current form and he has given a rather sad but truthful answer about the player’s form.
Anthony Martial has been going through a dreadful run of form this season. It’s not a simple issue to be ignored as the French striker has been very underwhelming for Manchester United over the past few years. Players have changed, the team’s tactical approach has changed but Martial has been still facing a goal drought.
He has scored more than 10 goals just thrice over the past seven years for Manchester United. He was in fine form in the year 2019 where he had scored his highest for Manchester United in a single season (23 goals).
But if we exclude that record, he has never been able to score consistently for Manchester United. Last year, he was unable to stay fit due to the injury he suffered while playing for France in the month of March.
This season too, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has given more opportunity to the incoming club legend Cristiano Ronaldo. Anthony Martial has been left on the bench for the majority of the matches and has been used only for those matches in which the club’s main attackers have been rested.
Sheringham has spoken about the same issue and he feels that the manager showers less love on Anthony Martial. As reported by the DailyMail, he said:
“It’s similar to Harry Kane and Tammy Abraham, center-forwards need to be loved. If you’re not feeling loved and appreciated, if you feel you have one chance to do well in the Carabao Cup and if you don’t, you’re not going to get anywhere near the Premier League games, it does put pressure on you. Tammy has gone to Roma and Jose Mourinho has said ‘go in there and if you miss chances, you’re not going to be out of the team straight away. When you are loved by a manager, you have that feeling. Martial obviously isn’t getting that at the moment because there are other players at the club in front of him and you feel like you have to snatch chances when you can.”

He has given the example of Tammy Abraham, who has been in fine form for AS Roma as he feels wanted by Jose Mourinho. It’s true that Martial should be looking for a new club if he wants to find his true potential.
Being just 25 years old, he has a lot of years to play and contribute. Manchester United was ready to sell him for a fee of around £50m last season. Maybe these funds could be used to sign another top-class striker next season.
