Solskjaer Admits De Gea Has Focus Back On Manchester United After Contract Extension

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that his star goalkeeper David De Gea has reportedly got back his focus on getting better for the club after signing his new contract extension.

The Spanish goalkeeper ended speculation over his future when he put pen to paper on a fresh four-year deal on Monday committing to the Red Devils until 2023 with the option to stay for another year.

There were long-running negotiations into the new season and kept potential European heavyweights interested in signing De Gea but Solskjaer grew increasingly confident of tying down the 28-year-old.

And now, the Norwegian expects to see the best of De Gea following a significant dip in his form last term. It looked like De Gea wasn’t really focused on playing for Manchester United as his contract was coming to a close but Solskjaer has overlooked that now.

The 46-year-old said in his pre-match press conference, “Most of the time we get to keep the ones we want to keep, The more I got to listen and speak to David, I was pretty confident we were going to make it. David is delighted. I think you could see by his performance [in the Premier League win] against Leicester that he had made up his mind. You could see the focus in his eyes again. You do feel very secure with a focused David behind you. He’s really worked hard this season. He’s still young. Edwin [van der Sar] signed for us when he was 35, so I’m sure David will be part of a successful United team.

De Gea will be rested for the Europa League game against Astana on Thursday in the Europa League and Sergio Romero will get the opportunity to start between the sticks for the Red Devils.
