Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed England center-back Harry Maguire to become the club’s captain for the foreseeable future after wearing the armband in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Red Devils cruised to a comfortable win at Old Trafford against Brighton and it seemed like the visitors were lucky to avoid losing by a much more crushing scoreline.
The 26-year-old Maguire led the team out as captain at the weekend and put in a generally commanding display at the back even though United failed to keep a clean sheet. Maguire arrived at the Theatre of Dreams from Leicester City in the summer transfer window for a world record transfer fee of £80 million making him the most expensive defender in the world and had a big impact on United’s defense.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had stated that Maguire has the ability to become a long term captain at the club. In the absence of Ashley Young, Maguire was named as captain for the home side and marshaled his defense relatively well to help United earn three crucial points to move them into 7th on the Premier League table.
The 46-year-old Norwegian spoke highly of Maguire after the win over Brighton and told reporters that the center back has been a great addition to the first team as well as the dressing room and has the knack to become a long term captain at Manchester United, “Harry has come in and been excellent in the dressing room and on the pitch. He can be a long-term captain.”
Despite struggling for goals on a regular basis United have strengthened their defense and it looks quite certain that Maguire can become a solid leader for the Red half of Manchester.
