Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that both Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba are designated penalty takers for the club.
The Red Devils had the chance to move to the top of the Premier League table if they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night but the game ended 1-1 with both teams sharing the spoils. French midfielder Paul Pogba missed a penalty in the second half which could have earned United all three points however Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio produced a stunning save from the 26-year-old.
United began the start of the new Premier League season with a bang as they thrashed their fierce rivals Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty. But there was some confusion at the Molineaux when United was awarded the penalty as there was an on-field discussion between Pogba and Rashford and the young English striker decided to hand over the ball to Pogba, who has now missed four penalties since the start of last season.
But Norwegian boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that the choice of taking a penalty is either up to Pogba or Rashford as the duo are the designated spot-kick takers. While speaking to Sky Sports after the game the 46 year old was asked who the first-choice penalty taker is and he replied by saying that it depends on the confidence of the players at that particular moment, “Because the two are designated penalty shooters, it’s up to them who feels it is theirs Sometimes players feel they are confident enough to score. Paul scored so many for us but the keeper made a good save. They are very confident, Marcus scored last week and he would have loved it but Paul was also confident and I like that confidence.”
