Manchester United have had a poor start to the season, with their lowest point being the 1-6 defeat to Tottenham, at Old Trafford. Since then, Solskjaer has not started the likes of Matic and Pogba in the midfield due to their defensive woes. In his recent talks with Sky Sports, Gary Neville says that Solskjaer has returned to basics and thus has used the trusted pairing of Fred and McTominay.
Manchester United could not stop the opposition in the opening games of the Premier League, because of a poor midfield and defence. The midfield duo of Pogba and Matic looked clueless about shielding the defence in the 6-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspurs, thus United conceded far too many goals. But after a change in personnel in the midfield, the Red Devils have shown good signs and have returned to winning ways.
In his talk, Neville said: “Coming out of the international break, what’s the difference? Ole has gone back to what served him well last season – that box: Victor Lindelof, Maguire, Fred, McTominay. All have a defensive mindset. All quick at getting to the ball, particularly those two in front of the centre-backs.”
The inclusion of Fred and McTominay has helped the defence settle down in the new season, as both the midfielders have a defensive mindset. The Red Devils have conceded fewer goals since the international break and look to have set a strong base to build from for the rest of the season.
