Manchester United clinch all three points at the end of the game in typical United style as they defeat Southampton in their backyard. From 2-nil down a half-time, the Red Devils showed spirit to come back to lead the game in the dying moments of the match. Edinson Cavani had his name written all over the game, as the Uruguayan came on at half-time to get a brace and an assist to save the game.
Manchester United started the game off well and even got a couple of golden chances to break the deadlock. But Greenwood missed an empty net and missed another chance to score with Bruno also missing from close quarters. But from then onwards, Southampton dominated the game in terms of possession and chances created.
As the Saints kept creating chances, they eventually scored from a well whipped-in corner, which De Gea could do nothing about. Ten minutes later, Southampton doubled their lead with Ward-Prowse scoring from a free-kick. David De Gea tried to keep the ball out but ended up injuring himself and his knee, which collided with the frame of the goalpost.
United kept on trying for the rest of the first half but could not create a clear-cut chance to score. At half-time, Solskjaer made a couple of bold decisions bringing on Edinson Cavani for Greenwood and Dean Henderson for De Gea. The Red Devils didn’t have a great start to the second half but came back steadily into the game after Bruno Fernandes scored in the 59th minutes of the game with a pin-point cross from Cavani.
There was no looking back from then as Manchester United stepped up the pressure and attacked. About 15 minutes later, Edinson Cavani equalized for the Red Devils with a pouncing header from a deflected Bruno shot. From then on, United started attacking even more for the third goal, which would get the three points.
In the 92nd minute of the game, Cavani scored from another great header to seal all three points for Solskjaer’s men. This was a show of character from Manchester United following their mid-week victory in the UCL and the team’s confidence will only increase from the game. Next up, the Red Devils face PSG in the Champions League and will be looking to win again.
