Manchester United FC have been encouraged to spend big to complete their summer overhaul after qualifying for Champions League next season. The Red Devils will be looking to add a few players and sell even more to get the balance of the team right. Reportedly the club has shown interest in Jan Oblak because of goalkeeping issues from David De Gea.
De Gea has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world but has made grave errors from the past two seasons. The Spaniard has made three errors that led to goals this season, in the Premier League. That is the joint second-highest in the league this season, and across the past two seasons, he has made seven such errors in the league.
With mistakes coming thick and fast from De Gea, he also has the third-highest clean-sheets this season, showing his inconsistency. This inconsistency has caused problems for Solskjaer and the board as they are confused about whether to keep De Gea or not. The emergence of Dean Henderson coupled with De Gea’s errors has put United in a tough corner.
But because of Henderson’s inexperience in a big club, United are reluctant to give the reigns to the 23-year old. To replace De Gea the club is reportedly in talks with Atletico Madrid for their No.1, Jan Oblak. Oblak is undoubted the best shot-stopper in the world and would walk into any side given his impressive record of clean-sheets.
This season, Oblak has played all the games in La Liga for the La Rojiblancos and has kept 17 clean-sheets. The Slovenian goalkeeper joined Atletico Madrid in 2014 and has been ever-present between the sticks ever since. But signing Oblak will be very difficult as Atletico don’t want to let go of their star goalkeeper.
United will have to pay the full amount of Oblak’s release clause which is about £110m, that is very high especially in this scenario. Signing the Slovenian is more like a far-fetched dream for the Red Devils this season. United will have to resolve their goalkeeping situation as soon as possible to have a chance of winning trophies next season.
