Phil Jones is one of the most loved meme material and laughed-at footballers in the world because of his shambolic performances on the pitch. Jones always seems to amaze everyone with his mistakes which are often followed by his dramatic yet bizarre expressions. But offending the footballer in a public platform is by no means a joke and that is exactly what Twitter UK learned.
In an unusual way to show their new upgrade, Twitter defamed Phil Jones in their latest tweet stating “Name a better defender than Phil Jones.” There is nothing wrong with the tweet until you realize that comments were been turned off and it was tweeted by UK’s official Twitter account. They soon deleted the tweet and then put out a statement of apology to Phil Jones.
In their defence, a Twitter spokesperson said: “Our aim was to showcase our new product feature, conversation controls, which allows you to select who can reply to a tweet. It was not our intention to cause upset and once we realised our mistake, we immediately deleted the tweet.”
Phil Jones has been struggling at United since the last three years and is currently ailing with a knee injury. But despite his form, United complained about the tweet and thus Twitter had to take it off, which shows United’s support for its players.
