According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have decided not to hand a long-term contract to Wout Weghorst next summer.
The Burnley striker was signed on a temporary basis in January after Cristiano Ronaldo left in an unceremonious manner. The Dutchman lost his spot in the starting XI after he scored just two goals in 26 appearances in all competitions.
Even though Anthony Martial has done the same in previous games, United won’t keep Weghorst past the end of his six-month loan agreement.
Weghorst might return to the Premier League next season after his parent club Burnley won promotion to the top division of English football. It will be expected that United will sign a new centre-forward in the forthcoming transfer window as they get ready to say goodbye to Weghorst.
Harry Kane and Randal Kolo Muani have been identified as the two top transfer targets, but United is leaning towards a move for the former after taking the first steps towards sealing his signing.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag’s team is focused on qualifying for the Champions League, which will be important to their squad plans.
Despite having a game in hand over their closest rivals, United are only four points ahead of Liverpool in fifth place following yesterday’s last-second loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Red Devils will be looking for a victory when they travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham on Sunday.
