United discover Cody Gakpo asking price ahead of January transfer window

According to The Sun, Manchester United has been informed that they will have to pay £50 million to acquire PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo during the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old was heavily connected with a move to the Red Devils over the summer, and he spoke with Erik ten Hag about a prospective move to Manchester.

Gakpo remained at PSV despite interest from Leeds United and Southampton, and the 20-time league champions ultimately signed Antony from Ajax. The striker has been in great form for the Netherlands in the World Cup, scoring three goals in four games as they advanced to the quarterfinals.

Prior to the World Cup competition, Gakpo was also in excellent form with PSV, recording 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games. Over the past few weeks, there have been a lot of rumours regarding the attacker’s future, with United reportedly determined to get him during the January transfer window.

The sudden departure of Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have accelerated the Red Devils’ plans to bring in a new forward sooner than they had originally intended to wait until the end of the current season.

The Sun reports that PSV is prepared to sell him for about £50 million in January and that the English champions are getting ready to make their approach.

The Dutch powerhouses want to capitalise on Gakpo’s current success by selling him, and both Real Madrid and Arsenal are thought to be fans of his abilities. Gakpo’s contract with Eindhoven expires in June 2026, although he has supposedly been informed that he can leave the Dutch club in 2023 if the club’s asking price is fulfilled.

Gakpo, who made his PSV debut in 2018, has tallied 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 appearances across all competitions.
