United end their interest for Moussa Dembele

Manchester United FC are reportedly in the lookout of a central-striker this summer transfer and were linked to Moussa Dembele of Lyon. The striker position needs some reinforcements even though Odion Ighalo signed a contract keeping him till January 2021. But sighting the emergence of Mason Greenwood and the high wage demands of Dembele, United have backed off the deal.

Martial and Ighalo have done well in the central striker position, with the former scoring 20 goals in all competitions this season. He also scored the first hattrick for any United player in seven years, against Sheffield United, after the restart. Martial is having his best season in a United shirt and looks like a different player altogether this season.

Previously, Martial had been heavily criticized for his attitude, low work-rate on the field and low goal-scoring records. But this season he has stunned all his critics and looks set to lead the line at Old Trafford for years. His work-rate since the restart has been second to none, as he also won the ball for Greenwood’s goal yesterday against Villa.

Mousa Dembele of Olympique Lyon has been linked to the Red Devils from the last couple of transfer windows. But finally, it is reported that United have taken their foot off the pedal because of Dembele’s wage demands. Dembele is a proven goal-getter and is the second-highest goalscorer in the Ligue 1 this season.

But with United linked to Sancho for a move, who would supposedly take-up the right-wing spot, the Red Devils think they have enough. With Sancho taking up the right-wing spot, Mason Greenwood would have to be benched and could be used in his favourite central-striker position. Greenwood has surprisingly made his mark in his first season itself, with a total of 16 goals in all competitions.

The Red Devils backing off a deal for Dembele might be good news for the likes of Greenwood and Martial. All the strikers have done great for United this season, but need to prove it in the long run as well. Only time will tell if United’s decision to back-out from a Dembele deal is a fruitful one.
