United football director John Murtough outlines January transfer plans

The club’s spending plans for January were revealed by Manchester United’s football director John Murtough, who also made it clear that the winter transfer window will see significantly less action.

Under Erik ten Hag’s direction, the Red Devils brought in six players this summer whereas, 28 players departed the club, with 12 players going on loans.

This season, United got off to a bad start, dropping games to Brentford and Brighton. Since then, the Red Devils have won their last four Premier League games under Ten Hag.

Murtough highlighted that while the Dutch manager would continue to have backing from the club, he will have less money to splash in January, which hasn’t been well received by fans.

While speaking to the club’s official website, the director of football said:

“Overall, we are ahead of schedule in our recruitment plans as envisaged at the start of the summer, and we do not anticipate the same level of activity in future windows. As always, our planning focuses on the summer window.”

This season, United have already signed their second and third most expensive signings in club history. Antony arrived from Ajax for £85.5 million and Casemiro joined from Real Madrid for an initial £60 million.

Additionally, the Reds acquired Lisandro Martinez from Ajax for a fee of around £56 million and signed Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord for £14.9 million. A lot of senior players left on free transfers as their contracts expired at the end of June, making it a busy summer for departures as well.

Ten Hag has received a decent amount of backing from the board and he would aim to bring in more players this January. It has been reported that a new striker and a right-back will be the focal target in the upcoming transfer window.
