United have been hit hard in their pursuit of signing Odysseas Vlachodimos

According to Foot Mercato, Manchester United has been hit with a major setback as Benfica shot-stopper Odysseas Vlachodimos is expected to sign a new long-term contract with the Portuguese side.

This season, Vlachodimos has been linked with a move to the Red Devils numerous times. There have been rumours that United might sign him this January.

However, their chances have been hit hard since, Benfica is about to tie him to a new, lengthy contract that will keep him with the club through the summer of 2027. The new contract will also have a €60 million release clause. Vlachodimos has been running the show in Portugal both in league games and in the UCL. In a recent Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, he attracted everyone’s attention by making seven saves in a 1-1 draw.

In addition to having quick reflexes, he has impressed this term with a passing accuracy of 79%. United shouldn’t be unhappy that they didn’t get him despite this. Although Vlachodimos has had an outstanding season for Benfica thus far, he is not the best at receiving crosses or distributing long balls.

These are the two main qualities Erik ten Hag looks for in his goalkeepers. If United decides to replace David de Gea next season, there are better shot-stoppers available on the market. The 28-year-old will be difficult to sign and United will have to look for other alternatives this January.

Borussia Monchengladbach star Yann Sommer will be a free agent in the summer but the Red Devils will look for a young keeper. If United wants a goalkeeper who can stay for the next ten years, they may choose Portuguese star, Diogo Costa.

It remains to be seen whether the club will succeed in finding the best goalkeeper that will suit Ten Hag’s playing style.
