According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are keeping an eye on Belgian star Arthur Vermeeren.
This season, the 18-year-old midfielder has been drawing interest from a number of clubs due to his impressive performances for Royal Antwerp. Newcastle United are one of the teams keeping an eye on the former Belgian Under-17 international.
But the Daily Mail reports that they might have to compete with United for his services. They claim that their scouts have been extensively monitoring him and are impressed by what they have discovered.
This week, Vermeeren turned 18, and he signed a new contract with Antwerp that runs until the summer of 2026. Antwerp values the teenager at £20 million, as he has made 12 appearances in the Belgian Pro League this season.
Although he has played 10 times for the Under-17s, he has yet to appear for Belgium’s senior side. Manager Erik ten Hag wants to sign new midfielders despite insisting that his team has adequate options.
In the past, when Alex Ferguson was the manager, Manchester United and Royal Antwerp had a good relationship in which a number of players were loaned to the Belgian team.
Defenders John O’Shea and Jonny Evans were among the players who later helped United win the Premier League.
