According to Spanish news outlet AS, Manchester United is highly interested in signing Barcelona striker Memphis Depay during the January transfer window.
Depay has had a challenging season at Barcelona. He played for the first team for just over 100 minutes before injuring his hamstring while representing the Netherlands in September.
The 28-year-old recovered in time for the World Cup, and it is now being said that the Spanish powerhouses are trying to analyse his performances in Qatar to extract some profit.
His contract with the Catalans expires in the summer of 2019, and AS reports that the Red Devils are the team that is most interested in signing the Dutchman. The Blaugrana are prepared to let with him leave in January.
Depay struggled from 2015 to 2017 during his first stint at Old Trafford. He has subsequently grown tremendously to become one of Europe’s top forwards. When he was with United, the Dutchman was a left winger who specialised in that position, but he is now capable of leading the line. His adaptability has convinced the hierarchy to discuss a transfer.
This winter, Depay might be available for just £4.3 million, although his pay is on the higher side. He may request a raise in wages because he now makes £173,000 per week in Barcelona.
Although the Red Devils ought to consider the possibility of re-signing Depay, it shouldn’t affect Cody Gakpo’s arrival.
Gakpo has a staggering 30 goal contributions from just 24 appearances for PSV this season, and he has been a revelation at the current World Cup with three goals. In the upcoming transfer window, the 23-year-old is available for £50 million. United must prioritise his signing and should not look at Depay as a less expensive transfer option next month.
