According to The Sun, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has declined to sign a new three-year contract that would have included a significant wage drop in his current contract.
The Spanish star has been in fantastic form for United this season, recording 20 clean sheets in all competitions. A new contract is being discussed with him as he has no intention of taking a wage cut of £9 million per year to remain at the club.De Gea is now United’s highest-paid player at £375,000 a week. According to reports, United want De Gea to accept a £200,000 per week contract.
The 32-year-old is hesitant to accept such conditions but is still optimistic that United can find a solution to extend his stay.
De Gea has been impressive under manager Erik Ten Hag this season. His form dipped at the start of the season and fans questioned his consistency at the club. Since then, he has appeared in most of the games this season. The management has praised the Spaniard for his numerous outstanding saves. Prior to the World Cup, Ten Hag praised De Gea for his improved distribution.
We believe that if United increase its contract offer, De Gea will ultimately decide to stay at Old Trafford. He might demand anything close to £300,000 every week.
The Spanish player is still at the height of his abilities. The club can afford to wait another two seasons before spending a significant amount of money on another top-tier keeper.
The present contract for De Gea expires in June, but United have the option of extending it for a further year. They could make advantage of the clause if contract negotiations are postponed.
