United striker Wout Weghorst responds to critics calling him the ‘worst signing’

Dutch striker Wout Weghorst defended his performance at Manchester United, saying he is “doing a good job” and has won Erik ten Hag’s trust.

The Netherlands star has scored twice in 18 outings since joining United on loan in January. Weghorst’s dismal comeback has drawn harsh criticism from a wide range of analysts, including Old Trafford icon Paul Scholes, who stated that he doesn’t possess the skills required to represent United.

Peter Schmeichel also referred to Weghorst as the “odd one out” on Ten Hag’s side.

Even sportscaster Richard Keys called him as the worst player he has ever seen wearing a Manchester United jersey, and he also stated that Ten Hag is essentially “playing with 10 men” with Weghorst on the field.

Ten Hag has persisted in defending Weghorst despite the criticism from commentators and some supporters, stating that he contributes more than simply goals to the club. Weghorst’s tenure at Old Trafford has coincided with a prosperous time for the club, which has won the EFL Cup and advanced to the FA Cup and Europa League semifinals.

As reported by the Metro, the Dutch striker has highlighted his ambitions for the club. He said:

“I’ve played a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me. It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team. That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies.”

“We have one now. We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League.”

“So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, that’s a good thing.”

Weghorst had a disappointing season at Burnley before joining Besiktas on a temporary basis in the summer and then transferring to United in January.

Despite his lack of consistency in front of goal, the 30-year-old did help United to win their first trophy since 2017 when they defeated Newcastle in the League Cup final at Wembley.

The Red Devils will face top-four opponent Newcastle United on April 2. They will also face Sevilla in the Europa League quarterfinals and Brighton in the FA Cup semifinals later in the month.
