Dutch star Cody Gakpo has rejected talk about his future because he wants to focus completely on the ongoing World Cup campaign.
The Netherlands forward has emerged as one of the stars of the competition thus far, sparking an increase in interest. Gakpo impressed at PSV Eindhoven last season and chose to stay with the Dutch team in the summer despite interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
As a result of Gakpo’s recent three goals in the World Cup, speculation over his future has increased. Some clubs may target the 23-year-old in January, but the forward sees no reason to bring up the topic while on international duty.
The two teams most likely to make a move for Gakpo are United and Real Madrid. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure, the Red Devils are in need of a striker and would benefit from having a forward who was at ease playing through the centre. Whereas, Madrid would love the idea of signing a versatile attacker who can play at multiple positions up front. However, Gakpo remains firm on his stance that he wants to focus solely on the International campaign.
As reported by the Athletic, he said:
“I have to be honest, I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on the tournament and want to keep performing well and helping the team. Hopefully, when we become world champions we can think about other things. I try to keep focused and the other players don’t really speak about that kind of thing.”
Gakpo has been in top shape for both club and country. In the past two seasons, he has lifted his standards in the Netherlands.
Since the summer transfer window, Erik ten Hag has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. He revealed that he held talks with the manager regarding a transfer but a move didn’t materialize.
The January transfer window could finally provide answers as the Red Devils are on the look out for an ideal Ronaldo replacement. However, Gakpo’s current form will make it difficult for United as many elite clubs will be attracted by his performances.
