Villarreal center-back Pau Torres could be United’s next star signing

Pau Torres is on Manchester United’s summer transfer shortlist, and the club could decide soon whether or not to approach Villarreal with a bid.

Manchester United are reportedly mulling a summer transfer for Pau Torres, according to Fabrizio Romano, and the defender might be a target.

With Erik ten Hag’s arrival, a definitive decision might be made in the coming weeks regarding the signing, however the Red Devils must be careful of rivals pushing for the Spanish international’s signature.

Torres has been one of Villarreal’s top performers over the last two seasons, putting up some stunning displays for the Yellow Submarine. Last season, the Spaniard assisted the team in winning the UEFA Europa League and reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in signing the centre-back. Tottenham and Chelsea have been mooted as potential bidders, with Manchester United also considering Pau Torres as a defensive solution.

Tottenham had been optimistic about completing a deal, but Villarreal’s €55 million asking price could be a stumbling block for the north London club, who have other places to enhance this summer.

Pau Torres is also expected to join Chelsea now that their ownership concerns have been settled. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are on the verge of leaving the Blues. Cesar Azpilicueta may also leave, forcing Thomas Tuchel to sign new central defenders in the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also interested in signing Torres, and it appears that the Red Devils are serious about making an approach.

Several considerations are preventing the club from submitting an offer as they await the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag from Ajax, as well as upcoming changes behind the scenes.

Due to a release clause in his contract, Torres might be available for about €55 million. For major clubs like Manchester United, the cost may not be an issue. However, whatever team is first to approach the Spanish international could sign him.

There could still be some time before Manchester United makes a final decision on Torres. The Red Devils have a stable of top-notch centre-backs, but they may have to part with some of their current choices.

Following a disappointing season, Harry Maguire’s future may be in jeopardy, and ten Hag will have to make a decision.

As a result, the situation with Pau Torres remains complicated, albeit it may become clearer in the coming weeks.
