Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes World Cup winning Paul Pogba “could be incredible” if he were to play in a deeper role for the Red Devils, a role similar that Frank Lampard played during his time at Chelsea.
Current Chelsea boss Frank Lampard remains in the fifth position of all-time top goalscorers in the Premier League and the former England midfielder was well renowned for his ability to burst forward and score crucial goals in big games.
Lampard’s former England colleague Wayne Rooney has recently admitted that playing his role was extremely difficult considering. However, the Derby County player/manager has opened up and stated that French midfielder Paul Pogba should try and emulate that role to the best of his ability and United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should give the midfielder the freedom to run forward when there is an opportunity to counter-attack.
Pogba has netted 31 times and notched up 31 assists in 151 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Juventus however, there is no doubt that those figures could improve.
While speaking to the Athletic, 34-year-old Rooney explained why Pogba could be well-suited for the role similar to Lampard, “I would love to see Paul Pogba playing deeper and attacking the box the moment the ball went wide. He would score more goals and with his good feet, his athleticism, he would be an absolute nightmare. I would use him in that role – it’s one where, if he developed in it, he could be incredible.”
Pogba has been struggling with an ankle injury this season and has made a restricted number of appearances this term, however, the 27-year-old has been training hard to make a strong comeback for United once the football resumes.
