The visitors to the London Stadium got the game underway to a strong start but were unable to capitalise upon their control to take an early lead.
Instead, it was West Ham’s Benrahma who looked to threaten on the attacking front and was joined by his strike partner Jarrow Bowen who forced a good save out of United goalie David de Gea.
On the other end of the pitch, Lukasz Fabianski denied Ronaldo’s effort after which Benrahma gave the hosts the lead from a shot that took a deflection off Raphael Varane and went past a helpless De Gea.
Just five minutes past Benrahma’s opener United found a leveller which came from the man in form Cristiano Ronaldo who forced a save from Fabianski but found the back of the net on the follow-up.
Early on in the second half, Fabianski made a fantastic stop to deny Ronaldo one-on-one as the hosts kept United at bay from scoring another and take the advantage.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bolstered his attacking options on the pitch by bringing on both Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard off the bench in a decision that soon reaped rich gains for the Red Devils.
Lingard was found by a Matic pass and the England international produced an absolute screamer which ended up in the top corner to make it 2-1 for Manchester United.
A Luke Shaw handball meant that West Ham were given a golden opportunity to level the scoreline inside the last seconds of the game but David de Gea stood his ground to make a flying save to deny substitute Mark Noble’s effort and win the game for United.
