Why Manchester United Need To Sign A New Left Back This Summer?

For the forthcoming summer transfer window Manchester United is actively looking to add a new left-back. This season the Red Devils have suffered with injuries to their full-backs which has left them desperately short of reinforcements.

Due to serious fitness concerns with Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, the team has struggled to field a reliable backline. According to football reporter, Fabrizio Romano, United is giving the purchase of a young left-back top priority.

Under manager Erik ten Hag Shaw and Malacia have not been able to sustain consistent playing time making the need for a dependable player in this position imperative. Manchester Uniteds defense has been a major source of difficulties this season.

Ten Hag has had to use players like Casemiro, Diogo Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat in positions that aren’t their natural ones due to injuries in order to fill defensive voids. Ten Hag demonstrated the severity of the issue at a recent press conference when he revealed that this season United have utilized 32 different backlines and 13 different partnerships at center-back.

Conversely, Tyrell Malacia has not played for Manchester United since sustaining a meniscus injury to his knee during the summer. Malacia is still without a confirmed return date to the field of play despite a video that appeared in April showing him working out in the gym. Almost a year ago he made his final appearance for the team against Fulham in the Premier League.

The club’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is another person driving the need to bolster the defense. Ratcliffe intends to make a number of signings in the summer in order to completely revamp the squad.
