Manchester United displayed a stunning performance against the Saints last time around where they ran riot with a thumping victory of 9-0.
Cavani had also been a pivotal part of the away fixture where he scored the winner to secure all three points for the Red Devils.
This time around he had a lot of help from all the teammates around him and also by some rash Southampton decision making in the very early stages of the game.
Manchester United have had a mixed week as they seem to be returning to their fine goalscoring form but Cavani being taken of raised a few eyebrows for the fans. We all know how much he has come to love this fixture in his relatively short period at Manchester United.
Anthony Martial came on to replace the veteran and landed up bagging two goals for himself which would certainly give him a lot of confidence.
While Martial gets the odd goal here and there he hasn’t been very consistent at the top and doesn’t have the kind of attacking instincts that one gets to see with Edinson Cavani.
Asked about Cavani’s performance by BT Sport after the game, Solskjaer revealed the 33-year-old had picked up an injury when tackled in the first half. “He was good, but he got a bad tackle on his ankle so there was no point taking any risks. Hopefully, it doesn’t swell up too much,” said Solskjaer.
Solksjaer has confirmed that he took Cavani out of the match as a precautionary measure and that he hopes it doesn’t turn into something that is too severe.
