Barcelona forward Memphis Depay reportedly pushed for talks with Manchester United last summer, as the Red Devils were closely linked with a move for the Dutch international.
The 28-year-old was actively seeking to speak with United about a potential return to Old Trafford, according to The Athletic. Depay was more eager than the Reds to sit down for negotiations, but the Barcelona star’s camp was obviously willing to discuss a deal.
United will be interested in the forward because he only has six months left on his contract and may be offered cheaply during the winter transfer window.
The club is considering loan deals and short-term solutions to address their lack of attacking firepower in the second half of the season. Given his present contract position, there is no indication that Depay would be available for loan, but Barcelona may think about selling the attacker for less money than they would have last season in an effort to prevent losing the former PSV player for nothing.
United have Anthony Martial as their lone striker. However, Marcus Rashford has been used as a striker before, but he has preferred to play as a winger. There is a void left to fill after Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure in November.
Depay could be a short-term solution in case the Red Devils want to add more strength to their attacking unit. However, there has been no concrete interest from the club in recent weeks.
