Manchester United could be a more attractive destination for Nicolo Barella

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United is considered a much more appealing option for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella compared to interest from Newcastle United.

Barella has been a crucial player in Inter’s midfield. However, he may depart the club in the summer as the Serie A giants need to address financial concerns and balance their books.

Newcastle United recently expressed their interest in signing the Italian midfielder, but according to reports, the player would prefer a move to Man United, despite the Magpie’s qualification for the Champions League.

Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that United has made inquiries about Barella and could potentially secure his services for a fee of €80 million plus additional bonuses. The midfielder had an impressive season with Inter Milan in 2022/23, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists in 52 appearances across various competitions.

In addition to his goal contributions, the 26-year-old showcased his skills by completing 85% of his passes, winning 1.5 tackles and over four duels per game. His dribbling abilities also caught the attention of the elite teams.

United is currently engaged in advanced negotiations to secure the signing of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. The club is expected to submit a renewed offer of approximately £50 million for the England international.

Manager Erik ten Hag supposedly has plans to pursue two midfielders. However, it remains uncertain if the club’s hierarchy would be willing to invest over £69 million for Barella’s services.

United is operating on a limited budget until player sales occur and can only afford one more high-value signing after completing the deal for Mount from Chelsea.

Considering that a striker and a goalkeeper are also on the manager’s wishlist, it is unlikely that the club will actively join the race for Barella’s signature.

A potential approach may be made later in the summer, depending on the funds generated from the sale of unwanted players.
