Gazzetta dello Sport has stated that Manchester United are eager to quickly secure the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana in the upcoming days.
David de Gea, who has been United’s primary goalkeeper for the past 12 years, is now a free agent as his contract expired on June 30th.
United are preparing for face-to-face discussions with De Gea regarding a contract renewal, but there is no certainty that he will retain his position as the first-choice goalkeeper next season.
Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta recently confirmed United’s interest in signing Onana, and the Red Devils are expected to submit a bid in the coming days. The urgency to sign the former Ajax player has increased as the pre-season approaches.

While a meeting between United and Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, was initially planned for Friday, it did not take place as Ausilio had to cut his trip short due to the ongoing transfer negotiations involving Marcelo Brozovic. However, new discussions are scheduled to occur in the near future.
Onana has already expressed his willingness to join United. He is eager to reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. Inter Milan have set a price tag of €50 million plus additional bonuses for the transfer of the goalkeeper.
Onana has earned a reputation as one of the top ball-playing goalkeepers, showcasing his skills in the previous season. He boasted an impressive 78% pass completion rate and averaged six long balls per game.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper also stood out with his ability to claim high balls and his agility within the penalty box. He possesses the qualities to act as a sweeper-keeper when required, which aligns with Ten Hag’s preferences for a goalkeeper.
In contrast, De Gea has been known for his reflexes but has struggled with distribution throughout his career. His long ball passes have often resulted in turnovers, and he has been susceptible to conceding goals from shots outside the box.

Signing Onana would be a significant improvement for Man United in the upcoming season. Ten Hag is hopeful that the club can secure the goalkeeper’s services before the start of pre-season friendlies this month.
Currently, Tom Heaton is the only available senior goalkeeper for the manager, as De Gea’s contract has expired and Dean Henderson is still recovering from injury.
