Following the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan on a loan deal, English defender Chris Smalling could become the latest player to leave Old Trafford as he has agreed on terms with Serie A side AS Roma.
Ole Gunnar Solskajer has decided that he needs to stamp his authority on this Manchester United team and the Norwegian boss has made progress towards that over the past few months. With the sale of Romelu Lukaku and allowing Alexis Sanchez to leave the club on loan, Solskajer has indicated that he does not want players that do not fit his philosophy.
The 46-year-old also splashed hefty sums on summer arrivals as United purchased center-back Harry Maguire from Leicester City in a world record deal making the Englishman the most expensive center-back of all time. Aaron Wan Bissaka was the next defender that United purchased as the right-back left Crystal Palace after a £50 million deal.
But with the European transfer window ending on September 2nd, United are still in the process of deciding whether or not a few players will leave the club. English center-back Chris Smalling is one of those players as he has fallen further down the pecking order amidst Maguire’s arrival.
The 29-year-old defender joined the Red Devils back in 2010 but has not been able to win over the hearts of the United faithful and is keen on leaving the club to attain regular football elsewhere. Serie A giants AS Roma are monitoring his situation at the moment and are ready to snap up Smalling on a loan deal without the option to buy.
Roma has agreed on a shock move with Smalling and is willing to pay around €3 million for the defender on a season-long loan at the Stadio Olimpico. Smalling is contracted to United until the summer of 2022.
