Former Liverpool attack Stan Collymore has explained that Red Devils striker Marcus Rashford could become the next Theo Walcott if he is not careful.
Manchester United are in a bit of a tough spot at the moment as they haven’t had the best of starts following their opening day 4-0 victory over Chelsea. Marcus Rashford scored a brace for the home side that day but has failed to find the next in any of his last three games as well and he also missed a penalty against Crystal Palace.
The 21-year-old forward was expected to fill in the goalscoring boots of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez after the duo left the club this summer to Inter Milan. But instead of playing as an out and out striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shifted Rashford’s position on the pitch on more than one occasion from the center to the left-hand side.
There is now a dilemma over which position suits Rashford best as the English star needs to make a choice by nailing down a place. And former England forward Stan Collymore claims that Rashford is in danger of becoming the next Walcott.
Walcott spent most of his time at Arsenal as a wide player even though he insisted that he was better off playing through the middle.
While speaking to reporters, the 48 year old Collymore said that Rashford needs to find the best possible position for himself, “If Marcus Rashford isn’t careful then, sooner rather than later, he is going to find himself cast as the modern-day Theo Walcott, Someone who isn’t seen as an out-and-out winger or straight-up No.9 but a Jack of all trades as a forward and master of none. That’s why now is the perfect time for him to decide whether that’s the way he wants to go. Or would he rather be a player who lives or dies as a No.9. If he’s happy to play anywhere if it means being an England regular then that’s his call. But if that is the case over the next five to 10 years then I worry about the negative impact such a decision could have on his club career because of the message it sends.”
