Everton and Leeds United keen on Sergio Romero

Manchester United FC will reportedly have a busy transfer window this summer as they look to sell some players to fund recruits. Earlier it was reported that Woodward put up six players for sale this transfer window including Sanchez, Lingard and Smalling. Now, Everton and Leeds are keen on getting Sergio Romero to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Sergio Romero is the No.1 for Argentina, who joined United from Sampdoria in 2015 and is arguably the best back-up goalkeeper in the world. Romero has played as second fiddle to David De Gea at Old Trafford and played most of the cup games for the Red Devils. Romero has played 15 games this season for United but hasn’t featured in the Premier League at all.

In those 15 games, Romero has kept 11 clean sheets and has conceded only four goals, which shows his class. With such a record, it is hard to argue that he deserves a chance in the Premier League. Especially with De Gea making huge mistakes, Romero hasn’t been given opportunities by Solskjaer and has been reportedly demoralized.

In last week’s Chelsea clash De Gea was preferred over Romero in the FA Cup game, where the Spaniard made two grave errors. Usually, Romero plays in FA Cups and Europa League games, but this selection has reportedly disrespected Romero, who now wants to leave. Everton and United’s arch-rivals Leeds are closely monitoring Romero’s situation at Old Trafford.

Leeds have made it back into the Premier League after 16 years and will do everything possible to stay beyond this season. Leeds manager, Marcelo Bielsa, is reportedly a fan of Romero and wants to bring him to the club. Romero at 31-years doesn’t have a lot left in his career and wants to enjoy his last years by playing some top-flight football.

With Dean Henderson’s emergence and Solskjaer’s trust in De Gea, a move for Romero looks very likely.  Romero’s move will also vacate a place in the goalkeeping department which will be very difficult to replace, especially in this pandemic scenario. Only time will tell if Romero chooses to move on or if he stays at Old Trafford.
