Blow for Manchester United as Chelsea enter race to sign Ronald Araujo

According to the Express, Manchester United face stiff competition in the race to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo this summer.

The Red Devils have been keeping a close eye on the defender’s contract issue, with reports claiming that they are the ‘best bidder’ for him. However their close rivals, Chelsea have now entered the race to sign him this summer.

Barcelona has reportedly made little progress in extending his contract beyond June 2023 and is prepared for his summer departure.

Matthias Ginter of Borussia Monchengladbach has been mentioned as a prospective alternative if in case Ronald Araujo leaves. The German will be available for a free transfer.

Meanwhile, Araujo is thought to be attracting significant interest’ from England, particularly from Manchester United and Chelsea who are looking to add a new center-back in their back-line.

Under Xavi, Araujo has developed into a crucial defender. When he’s fit, he’s seen as an indisputable starter, and the Blaugrana are clearly hoping for a contract extension.

However, they are now unwilling to accept his salary demands, which might clear the way for a summer transfer to the Premier League.

Manchester United are known to be big fans of the Uruguayan, who is very good with the ball at the back. This term, the 22-year-old has completed 90% of his passes.

He’s also won two aerial duels each game, as well as two clearances. Meanwhile, with his ability to execute perfect tackles, he has a strong presence in the box.

As a result, the £31.5 million-rated star has the potential to develop into a world-class center-back, but United’s hopes of attracting him may hinge on his ability to play regularly.

The Red Devils’ first-choice options are Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof serving as the regular backup. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones haven’t had much time on the field.

Maguire’s future has been questioned, but interim manager Ralf Rangnick recently talked on the matter by stating his entire support for the club captain.

Chelsea is also facing similar issues as Antonio Rudiger is yet to sign a contract extension and Christensen has also been linked to a move to Barcelona. They need a quality center-back to fill in the slot.

It’s now up to the club to make a move for Araujo who is now in Thomas Tuchel’s plans as well. It will be a tough fight between the two Premier League giants.
