Newcastle United FC have had their hopes shattered of a Saudi takeover as plans dropped due to intervention from Premier League stakeholders. The Magpies though have been a mid-table club for most of last decade but have ambitions to go further up. It is now being reported by the ChronicleLive that Chris Smalling is being offered to Newcastle for about £20m.
Smalling has had a great season in Italy with AS Roma and seems to have brought his career back in track. The former United captain was instrumental in AS Roma’s season and played a huge role in their success this season. The England international has drawn attention from several clubs in Italy and England because of his performances with Roma.
Smalling himself would’ve loved to stay back with AS Roma but unfortunately for him, United couldn’t agree on a deal with the Italian club. Solskjaer doesn’t rate Smalling very highly and doesn’t guarantee him playing-time thus a move is imminent. Smalling’s move would make sense for all parties, but Newcastle might want to bring the asking price of United down to afford the former United captain.
Smalling would be a great addition to Newcastle because of the Magpies’ shaky defence. But it all depends upon Smalling’s wish if he wants to stay in England or wants to go back to Italy.
