Corinthians president Alves reveals that Cavani made him a laughing stock

Corinthians president Duilio Monteiro Alves has revealed that he regrets running behind Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani’s transfer.

Last summer, the South American club was trying to sign the Uruguayan striker for free as they tried everything they can to have conversations with his agent.

But the transfer fell through as the 35-year-old striker committed himself to the club till the end of the season. Obviously, Corinthians president Alves wasn’t happy with the outcome of the entire situation.

He said to Globo Esporte:

“I have to look for the best in the world. I may not be able to, but I will try. I admitted that I went after Cavani and became a laughing stock. I said that I went after Neymar and became a laughing stock. Corinthians is much bigger than these guys. My obligation is to go after the best. Who thought Willian would be here?”

After signing for Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo has been a regular starter. Due to this Edinson Cavani was hardly getting any game-time.

However, Manchester United didn’t want their star player to leave and they knew his importance in the squad. Soon after Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the new interim manager who was quick to make decisions regarding his player’s future at the club.

The manager talked to Edinson Cavani and assured him that he will be a part of his plans and he was highly admired by the club. After that important conversation with the player, he has now started three of the last five Premier League games. Although many will argue that he started in those games due to Ronaldo’s injury.

Edinson Cavani was crucial against West Ham last week as he assisted the 90th-minute winning goal. Till now, he has made 14 appearances this season and has two goals to his name.

He is tied to the club for the next five months, but after that time period, his future is still uncertain. He could leave if the club attempts to sign a young striker next summer.
