Darko Pancev regrets not joining Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson

European Cup winner Darko Pancev has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson expressed interest in signing him for Manchester United in the 1992-93 season.

Pancev was a highly sought-after forward during his tenure at Red Star Belgrade, where he netted 97 goals in three years and secured six trophies, including the 1990-91 European Cup.

His remarkable performances earned him the title of joint Ballon d’Or runner-up in 1991. Subsequently, in the following year, he made a transfer to Inter Milan in a deal valued at €12 million, which was a joint-record fee at the time.

Pancev struggled during his three seasons with the Serie A team and even spent a year on loan. Unfortunately, he never regained his previous form and ultimately retired at the young age of 31 in 1997.

In an interview with Sport Buzzer, Pancev admitted that he was in high demand during that period and expressed regret about his choice of club.

He revealed that Ferguson had extended an offer to him within months of his move to Inter, but he made the mistake of declining it in an attempt to establish himself in the Italian top flight.

While speaking to Sportbuzzer, he said:

“I was very sought after at the time and had many offers, but unfortunately I chose the wrong club. Inter had an average team back then, in the shadow of AC Milan. I also had huge differences of opinion with the coach at the time.”

“Nevertheless, in the winter I received an offer from Sir Alex Ferguson, who wanted to bring me to Manchester United. But I didn’t follow the call because I wanted to prove to the Italians that I could make it in Serie A. In hindsight, I have to admit it was stupid!”

Pancev’s decision to reject Sir Alex and Man United turned out to be a fortunate twist of fate. In November 1992, the club signed Eric Cantona from Leeds United for a mere £1.2 million.

The rest, as they say, is history. Cantona became a massive success for the Red Devils, amassing 82 goals and 62 assists in 185 appearances.

He clinched nine trophies, including four league titles. Although the French ace retired before his 31st birthday, he left an indelible mark on the club’s history.

Pancev might have had a similar impact if he had chosen to join the club.
