Erik ten Hag could target Brentford star Ivan Toney

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is targeting Brentford attacker Ivan Toney as the search for an ideal Cristiano Ronaldo replacement goes on.

As per the Manchester Evening News, Toney has a lot of supporters at Old Trafford and has been mentioned as a potential successor. Brentford was prepared to hand a new, lucrative contract to their star player to deter United’s interest. However, that will not stop the Red Devils from monitoring the Englishman.

Under Erik ten Hag, Ronaldo played a minor role. Since the 4-0 defeat to Brentford, the Portugal international has not been able to earn a Premier League start. The 37-year-old has been far less favoured when compared to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The veteran forward still intends to depart in January, with Chelsea or Dortmund as his likely destinations.

Toney could be an ideal replacement as he has been in fine form for the bees. The 26-year-old scored a spectacular goal and was a complete menace to the United defence as Brentford scored four goals past De Gea in the opening 35 minutes.

Toney has scored six goals and provided two assists in the nine appearances he has made for the Bees so far this season. As a result, Gareth Southgate gave him his first call-up to the England team due to his inspiring display.

Unquestionably, the English star would be a welcome addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad. It is an open fact that the club requires a lethal goalscorer to share the starting number nine slot with Anthony Martial.

Toney’s contract expires in 2025, and Thomas Frank’s team will probably want a hefty sum in order to part with his services.
